These Chocolate Covered Apples make for a healthy chocolate dessert everyone will love making and eating!
Whenever we go apple picking we get a TON of apples so we can have them for snacking but also for recipes. One of the easiest and kid-friendly is this chocolate dipped apples!
INGREDIENTS YOU’LL NEED
- Granny Smith Apples – these are our apples of choice. The tart apple matches beautifully with the chocolate and added toppings.
- Chocolate – We use enjoy life chocolate chunks, they’re vegan and allergy-friendly.
- Refined Coconut Oil – This will help thin out the chocolate, you can skip if you want a thicker chocolate coating on your apples.
- Toppings – Our toppings of choice today are rainbow sprinkles and mini chocolate chips.
You’ll also need apple skewer sticks to give the apples a handle.
HOW TO MAKE CHOCOLATE COVERED APPLES
- Remove the stems and wash the apples. Pat them dry with a clean towel to prevent water from getting into the melted chocolate. Water will cause the chocolate to seize up!
- Insert the skewers into the center of the apple, where the stem was before removing.
- Take a small saucepan and fill it with a little bit of water, about a cup. Place the saucepan onto the burner and bring it up to a simmer.
- Place a glass bowl onto the saucepan and then pour in the chocolate chunks and coconut oil. Mix the chocolate chunks to help them melt.
- Once the chocolate is fully melted dunk the apples in the melted chocolate. You can swirl it around and use a spoon to help make the chocolate cover the apples.
- After you’ve coated the apples give them a little swirl around to remove the excess chocolate. Add your favorite toppings and then place onto a parchment or Silpat lined baking sheet.
- After you’ve dipped all the apples you can place into the refrigerator for 20-30 minutes or until the apples look dried.
- Enjoy now or serve within 3-4 days.

COMMON QUESTIONS
HOW TO STORE CHOCOLATE DIPPED APPLES
Once the apples are done you want to place them in the refrigerator. If you’re not enjoying them right away leave them in the refrigerator until you’re ready to serve.
HOW LONG DO CHOCOLATE COVERED APPLES LAST?
We suggest enjoying them within 3-4 days.
HOW TO MAKE CHOCOLATE COVERED APPLE SLICES
You would repeat the same process as we did dipping the whole apples into chocolate, but you’d be doing it with slices. You can fully cover the apple slices or do a dipped apple slice. If you’re doing dipped apple slices we suggest soaking the apples in a bit of water mixed with lemon juice to prevent browning.
REFINED VS UNREFINED COCONUT OIL
Refined is a bit more processed and results in a milder tasting oil. Unrefined has a deeper coconut flavor.
RECIPE TIPS
- Dry the apples after washing, water will cause the chocolate to seize up.
- Use coconut oil to thin the chocolate, if the chocolate is too thick you may need to melt it a bit more or try adding more coconut oil.
- Granny Smith is preferred, but you can use whatever apples you like.
- Use organic apples whenever possible, especially since no organic may have a waxy coating.

Great idea!! I have a vegan co-worker coming for a Christmas party this year and I would like to provide some yummy snacks for her (and everyone) and this looks like a winner! I am concerned with the chocolate falling off in one huge chunk as soon as she bites into it. Have you had any issues with this happening?
Courtney
We haven’t had that issue as long as it’s nice and thin drizzles π
Katy
Hi there!
I was just wondering if the chocolate hardens on these? Or do les it become soft once they are taken out of the refrigerator? I’m wanting to leave these out on a table for a couple of hours, so that’s why Im asking.
Thank you!
Courtney
It definitely hardens π
Brandon
Great recipe thanks, we made chocolate covered apples and pears too.
Courtney
Ooh, we haven’t tried pears! Glad you enjoyed π
