Whether you’ve got too many avocados from your avocado tree, found a great sale on avocados, or stocking up because there’s a shortage of avocados, you can easily freeze avocados to last 4 to 6 months instead of just a few days within ripening.

Can you freeze avocados and why should you?

Yes! You can absolutely freeze fresh avocado. Frozen avocado is good for smoothies, in recipes, dressings, making guacamole, or on your avocado toast. You can freeze avocado sliced, diced, or pureed. You can even freeze guacamole. The texture of avocado does change so after thawing frozen avocado you’ll notice it has more of a watery texture.

Fruits and vegetables often have more vitamins and minerals than fresh produce. Frozen fruits and frozen vegetables are from produce picked at peak ripeness and it’s frozen quickly so that they retain all the nutrients. Fresh produce loses its vitamins and minerals each day it sits, don’t forget the transit time to the store shelves.

Freezing is a great way to preserve the items you won’t be able to use in time, it’s a great way to use up all your produce. We love using fresh or frozen apples in many recipes.

Sometimes with avocado, you may experience browning when freezing. We don’t personally experience this, but to prevent browning you can use a little citrus like lemon or lime.

    Freezing and Thawing Tips

    • When freezing make sure you’re using ripe avocados as they won’t ripen any further after freezing.
    • Use freezer-safe bags or containers to freeze long-term. When using a bag get as much air out as you can. Avocados contain water so they will expand a little when freezing, keep this in mind when filling your containers.
    • Use citrus juice like lemon or lime juice when freezing to prevent browning. Browning may happen, but you can just mix it up or remove the brown parts if you desire.
    • To thaw frozen avocado we recommend placing it in the refrigerator the night before.
