Apples are so nutritious and delicious. We especially love enjoying them during apple season, we go apple picking and stock up.

    How to peel an apple

If you need to remove the peel you can use a fruit and vegetable peeler. If you’re doing a large batch of apples for baking we highly recommend investing in a good quality apple peeler and corer.

Place the apple onto a sturdy cutting board and use a paring knife to carefully cut the apple around the core. We start on one side and cut just before the center, making sure we’re not cutting into the seeds and core.

Why I don’t recommend an apple cutter

Apples are all unique and they have different shapes and sizes. Unless an apple is genetically modified to be uniform in size and shape, you may have an issue using an apple cutter.

Using a cutting board and a paring knife is our favorite way to cut apples.

    How to pick apples

If you’re picking apples off an apple tree first select an apple that looks ripe as in it’s fully grown and the color it should be. Then you’ll want to gently grab the apple and pull it off. If the apple is ripe it should come off the tree with ease.

If you’re purchasing apples from the store, you should be able to feel if the apple is good by appearance and touch. You want to avoid any apples with shriveling, soft spots, or bruises.

    How to store apples

You can store apples in the refrigerator, a cool garage or basement, or a root cellar.
