This Homemade Chocolate Milk is so simple to make with simple ingredients like cocoa, sugar, vanilla bean, and grass-fed cows milk. It’s so good that it will be your go-to chocolate milk recipe that the whole family will enjoy.
Our Homemade Chocolate Milk Recipe is perfect for little ones or even yourself. Typically we write all about produce here but with our growing toddler comes the traditional things that kids enjoy, like chocolate milk. Have you ever looked at the ingredients that are in those store-bought chocolate milk or even the chocolate syrups? I’ll pass on both and refuse to ever give either to our daughter. Homemade Chocolate Milk is ridiculously easy to make!
Homemade Chocolate Milk Mix
All you need is:
- Milk
- Vanilla Sugar
- Cocoa Powder – we now use cacao
If you’d like you could even make a mix for later use and then blend it right into the milk. We now have a container of the mix that we make once a month to use and easily blend into milk to make homemade chocolate milk easily.
How to make Homemade Chocolate Milk
Once you have all of these ingredients you can measure out the correct amounts in the recipe below. This recipe can be made in any blender, but we find that we get the best results with our Vitamix or Blendtec high-speed blenders. It really mixes in the raw sugar and cocoa without the need to cook.
Many people are against using sugar these days, however, people have been using it for years and with all these “new” options I get weary and stick to what’s tried and true. You can certainly substitute with whatever you use. We use organic cane sugar and flavor it with organic vanilla beans.
We typically make a batch of it and it will last us about a week! I bought a few Bormioli Rocco Frigoverre Jugs for when we make homemade drinks and this is perfect for our Quick and Easy Homemade Chocolate Milk Recipe! It’s a glass jug with a seal and you can even hold it upside down, no spills!
When making homemade you get to control all the ingredients, which is why we’re preaching about it! We do get most of our ingredients organic, however, the cocoa isn’t since our daughter has FPIES and the organic cocoa we bought didn’t agree with her allergies. That’s another reason we can’t even buy the store-bought stuff because of all the unnecessary ingredients.
With this chocolate milk recipe, you can make it as sweet as you want and as chocolaty as you like. My favorite part is when I blend it up and pour it into the jug, the top is rich and creamy and hubby said it actually tastes like a milkshake, yum! We may or may not sneak a bite before it settles down.
Also if you’re interested in a chemical free plastic free sippy cup we highly recommend organicKidz . It’s the perfect option if you’re avoiding plastics.

Hi! Stumbled Across your blog via “Super Healthy Kids” and I want to try this recipe! Do you make a big batch at once or a cup at a time? I am confused since the recipe states a quart of milk but the directions state to add a small amount of milk. Sorry if this is a silly question!

Hi Lori! Thanks for stopping by 🙂 We actually like to combine the ingredients with a little bit of milk as the milk gets really frothy. Once you have combined the mixture you can pour in with the remaining milk. Hope that helps!! 🙂

I’ve been trying to figure out a chocolate recipe that would sate my quarantine-cravings without having to buy my favorite (but HFCS and other questionable ingredient-filled) version from the store. I had tried a couple other recipes that aren’t terribly different from yours, but they just weren’t as good as store bought. The only real difference here is the addition of vanilla (I didn’t have vanilla sugar; I used a little vanilla paste), and the blending (rather than whisking or stirring). I don’t know why it makes a difference, but, for me, it apparently does! I slightly adjusted the sugar to my personal sweetness tastes, but other than that, it was just what I wanted. I had been realizing that what I wanted in chocolate milk was a taste that was similar to melted chocolate ice cream. Your mention of chocolate milkshake gave me hope, and I agree it tastes like that. Thank you!

So glad you enjoyed! The blending definitely brings it all together beautifully!
