    What are Pepino Melons?

Pepino melons are small oval shaped fruits that are native to South America. While you may think they’re a melon due to their name, they’re actually part of the nightshade family, like tomatoes and eggplants.

They have a pale yellow flesh, with a light yellow creamy colored skin. The skin also has purple streaks around it.

What do Pepino Melons Taste Like?

When you slice and bite into a pepino melon you’ll be surprised that it’s not sweet like a melon, but more so resembles the flavor of a tomato to me. I love yellow tomatoes and it definitely has similarities. It also has a slight mealy texture, but not as mealy as a mealy tomato. It will have some subtle sweet notes, but they aren’t a true melon like a honeydew or cantaloupe.

The texture is smooth and firm, also a bit juicy.

    Pepino Melon Benefits

Pepino melons are rich in minerals and vitamins like thiamine, niacin, riboflavin, ascorbic acid, and even Vitamin C.

    They’re also low in calories!

When are Pepino Melons in Season?

Pepino melons are typically in season from late spring to early fall, but they can grow year-round in warmer regions such as South America, Southern California, and parts of Australia.

    How to Store Pepino Melons

Store unripe pepino melons at room temperature until they ripen. Once ripe, they should be kept in the refrigerator and can last for up to one week.

    How to Enjoy Pepino Melons

Pepino melons can be eaten fresh, simply sliced and enjoyed as a refreshing snack. We also like adding them to salads and smoothies! Many like enjoying it wrapped in prosciutto as well!
