We love strawberries so when we saw these new berries in the store we had to try them, but are they worth the $10 price tag?

    What are Oishii Strawberries?

Oishii strawberries also known as Koyo Berry or Omakase Berry are a premium variety of strawberries that are known for their exceptional sweetness, juiciness, and perfect balance of flavor.

Grown using advanced farming techniques, these strawberries are often considered a luxury fruit, offering a taste experience that is superior to regular strawberries.

    How are Oishii Strawberries grown?

Oishii strawberries are grown through vertical farming allowing for year-round fresh fruit production. This was the method that was chosen when replicating the ideal conditions of a perfect day in Japan, including soft rain, mild heat, warm light, and buzzing bees.

This method allows Oishii to achieve the perfect bite in every berry.

Their rigorous farming practices ensure healthy plants without the need for pesticides, maximizing space and promoting sustainability for the future of food.

Their newest facility also utilizes solar energy along with a state-of-the-art water recycling system. They are farming in the future as well by using advanced robotics.

What do Oishii Strawberries Taste Like?

Upon my first bite of an Koyo berry I was hit with sweetness, it was truly the perfect bite. As I went for another bite I was getting more floral notes. I compared the test between an Oishii strawberry and a Driscoll strawberry for control. (Koyo berry on the left, Driscoll’s on the right, pictured above)

The Oishii stood out in sweetness and aromatics. We purchased two packages and all of the berries tasted the same, none of them were sour.

We have not seen the Omakase Berry in our stores yet.

Do Oishii strawberries look different than regular strawberries?

When slicing open, we did notice that the Oishii strawberry had more white inside than the Driscoll’s strawberry.

The Driscoll’s strawberry was also delicious, but when compared to the Oishii strawberry, it wasn’t as sweet nor was it floral so the color inside and outside did not hold true to the darker the berry, the sweeter the taste.

The outside of the Driscoll’s strawberry was more red, where the Oishii strawberry while red, was a bit more on the orange side of red.

What Types of Oishii Strawberries are There?

Oishii strawberries come in Koyo berry and Omakase Berry. We haven’t not seen the Omakase Berry yet, just the Koyo and we saw varied sizes from normal size berries, medium, small-medium, and small.

    Oishii Strawberries Benefits

Just like regular strawberries, Oishii strawberries are nutrient-rich, packed with vitamins C and K, fiber, and antioxidants.

They have a high vitamin C content which is great for the immune system. They are high in antioxidants and fiber, and make for a healthy, low-calorie snack option.

When are Oishii Strawberries in Season?

Thanks to Oishii’s advanced indoor farming technology, these strawberries are available year-round. This controlled environment ensures that each berry is grown under optimal conditions, producing high-quality fruit regardless of the season.

Can you grow strawberries like Oishii strawberries?

Growing the Oishii strawberries at home is challenging due to their specialized cultivation requirements.

They are typically grown in vertical farms with precise control over light, temperature, humidity, and nutrients. It’s quite the setup, but can be achieved if you’re extremely dedicated.

    How much are Oishii Strawberries?

At the time of posting, we paid $9.99 at our local Whole Foods per package. We purchase two different sizes, large and small-medium and the pricing was the same.

How to pick out Oishii Strawberries

The packaging makes it extremely easy to pick as you can visually see each berry. They are made so that each berry should be perfectly ripe, sweet, and taste just as good as they look.

When selecting strawberries, look for bright berries with a fresh, green stems and no signs of bruising or mold. The strawberries should be plump and firm, with a uniform color indicating ripeness.

    Where to buy Oishii Strawberries

We’ve found them at our local Whole Foods Market, but they’re also available through fresh direct. You can use their store locator to find the closest location and what offerings they should have at that store.

    How to Store Oishii Strawberries

Oishii strawberries should be stored in the refrigerator in their original packaging. Keep them dry and consume within a few days for the best flavor and texture. Do not shake the container or drop them as they’re very fragile.

    How to Freeze Oishii Strawberries

Found a great deal on Oishii strawberries and want to preserve them? Learn How To Freeze Strawberries

To freeze strawberries, wash and hull them, then pat dry. Place them in a single layer on parchment paper or silpat lined baking sheet with space in between them. Place them in the freeze for 4 hours or until frozen solid.

Once frozen, transfer the strawberries to a freezer bag or container. This method prevents them from sticking together, making it easier to use individual berries as needed.

    How to Enjoy Oishii Strawberries

Due to the pricing and delicacy of these berries, we recommend them for fresh eating, garnishing desserts, or anything where they’re the centerpiece. Per Oishii, they are best enjoyed at room temperature.

    • Fresh: Eat them plain to savor their natural sweetness.
    • Desserts: Add to cakes, pastries, ontop of a cupcake, or tarts for a burst of flavor.
    • Smoothies: Found a sale? Use them as you would regular berries like in our Strawberry Mango Smoothie!
    • Salads: Toss into salads for a sweet contrast.
    • Drinks: Use in cocktails or infused water for a refreshing twist.
