We do not need refined sugar and these days there are PLENTY of options for healthy sugar substitutes and dates are one of our favorites! Dates are a healthier option and are made up of unrefined sugars. You can use them in smoothies, stirred into yogurt, baking, it’s even great in oatmeal instead of brown sugar.

how do you make date syrup?

There’s no reason to buy date syrup, it’s easy to make at home and only 2 ingredients, and ready in less than 5 minutes total.

date sugar ingredients = Medjool dates + water, that’s it!

dates and date seeds on a marble board

Remove the seeds from the dates and place them in your high-speed blender.

Cover the dates with hot water and allow to sit for 25-30 minutes. This is to allow the dates to soften and they will blend much easier.

Once the dates have sat you can blend, we blend in our Vitamix for 5 minutes.

The mixture will be hot, allow to cool and pour into your desired container. We use a mason jar.

is date syrup better than sugar?

I’d rather give my family a whole food form of sugar than refined sugars. Like this caramel for example. My daughter loves dipping apples into a thickened date syrup and doesn’t know it isn’t caramel. Most people with allergies can safely enjoy, just make sure the dates aren’t processed with other ingredients.

When you cook this sauce on the stove it becomes a thick butter/spread and great for apples or pears.

Want more options for better sugars to use for your family?

our top picks for unrefined sugars (minimally processed) include:

    • dates
    • maple syrup
    • honey
    • date sugar
    • coconut palm sugar
    • sucanat
    • unsulphured molasses (aka blackstrap molasses)
    • raw agave nectar

    recipe tips:

    • when not using a high-speed blender you may get some pieces of skin or bits and pieces here in the syrup. don’t worry, it’s still edible
    • save leftovers in the fridge for 3 days or up to a week if you add a preservative like lemon
    • thicken this recipe by cooking on the stove on high heat until boiling, then reduce the heat and cook on low until desired thickness
    • add in flavors – cinnamon and vanilla are our favorite additions
